#7-Seattle Part 2 (The PP Market, the downhill bus and SAM & the giant Rat!

This a blog about trying new things. Reaching beyond my comfort zone, exploring and making the most of life. My goal is to try 52 new things. One per week for a year.

Another day of sleeping-in on amazingly comfy hotel beds. We ate some snacks we bought at the corner market down the street next to our bus stop. Then we got ready for our day. Today we are going to the famous Pike's Place Market www.pikeplacemarket.org. We take Bus #12 which I think has pretty much taken us everywhere we have needed to go. Oh... and gave us a scare on the way back from downtown Seattle to our hotel. We were going up First Hill, our hotel is near the top. And the bus had to slam on the brakes due to a dumb driver pulling in front of us. Then... the bus died! We start rolling backwards as the driver tries to start it and then SLAMS on the brakes. I hold onto the seat in front of us. The driver tries again... Tries to start, rolls back then SLAMS on the brakes. Now, I'm starting to get nervous. Joel mentions something like, "I hope there are no cars behind us" A passenger stands up in a panic, "Open the doors and let me out, I don't want to die!" Finally she gets it going again. We all breath a collective sigh of relief.
We arrive a block or two away from the market and walk over. First thing we see is the famous sign with the clock next to it. We take some pictures and walk towards the fish counter. There are tons of people all around. We walk around a bit and try to get our bearings. We notice the "Huskers" all over the market. That weekend University of Washington Huskies VS Nebraska Huskers football game www.washington.edu. Since we arrived in Seattle we have seen them everywhere and they are serious fans. They are all wearing their Red and White Huskers gear. We walk back towards the famous fish counter and it sounds like they are getting ready to throw a big fish. They have a college girl behind the counter and one of the guys is giving her a pep talk about how to catch the fish. About 15 feet away towards the sidewalk another guy is holding a big fish getting ready to hurl it over to the college girl, a Huskers fan, of course. He calls out the kind of fish it is, the rest of the guys repeat him and then throws it and she misses. Thwap! Onto the ground. She turns to her "fish catching coach" and says cries out... it was slippery! She shifts her position a bit and they try again and she catches it. Hurrah! Everyone claps and takes pictures. Pretty cool. One of the other workers at the fish counter gives us a sample of smoked salmon, I try to pass but he says oh no, no, no, here take this, you HAVE TO TRY THIS. I have had salmon before, it's alright, I guess. But, this Salmon was the shiz-nit! Moist, smokey, melt in your mouth fabulous-ness! We start to venture out into the rest of the market. The flowers were amazing and cheap. There were samples of vinegars, oils, jams, fresh fruit, pasta and so on. Being from the Central Valley I was amazed by how good the fruit was too, I think of our produce as being the best in the world. We had gotten a recommendation from our waitress at Peso's to try a place called Matt's in the Market www.mattsinthemarket.com for lunch. So, we wandered over there but it was still early. They didn't open for another half hour. So we decide to go ahead to Starbucks. This isn't just any Starbucks. It's the very first one! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starbucks And it's where I have my very first cup of coffee ever in my life. "And that's all I have to say about that"(My best Forrest Gump) I will be blogging about it in a few weeks though. We wandered around some more, bought some spicy chili oil and go back and buy some smoked salmon($29.99 lb) then head to Matt's. Everything on the menu is fresh from the market. It was already packed when we came back and almost didn't get in. I recommend reservations for this hot spot! The restaurant was on the second floor of a building that overlooks the main entrance of the market. As we sat there waiting for our food. I noticed that the clock on the famous Pike's Place Market sign was wrong. It doesn't work. Joel said, "it's right twice a day". The food was simple yet, delighful and pure. Just the way food should be. I had tomato soup, house salad with pine nuts and blue cheese and fresh potato bread with a iced lavender tea to wash it all down. The perfect place to eat at the market.
After lunch we headed to down a few blocks to see SAM. No, not Joel's brother Sam. The Seattle Art Museum www.seattleartmuseum.org. It was an eclectic mix of new and old, paintings and sculptures, rugs and masks. My favorites are always the 16th-19th century oil paintings. There are 4 stories to the museum. Most of the artwork is on the top 2. We wandered around for about 2 hours. Saw very few pieces that wow-ed me. A lot of the modern art well, I just don't get it I guess. There was this one sculpture. It was a giant black rat, it had to be 10 feet tall it was sitting on top on a man sleeping in his all-white bed. I gasped when I saw it and then... couldn't stop laughing. Right before we left for Seattle, we found a mouse in our bedroom. Eeeek! My nightmare had come to life right before my very eyes. It was so crazy, I just couldn't believe it.
To be continuted.....

Sounds like a perfect vacation! How did your 1st cup go? It's really your 1st cup ever? I never drank coffee until I met Ben. He can drink coffee non-stop, AM, noon and night! Now I have come to be what I call a "Minorleague Connoisseur" of the ol' Cup O' Joe!
We had a wonderful time. Wish we could have stayed a couple more days. Yes, it truly was my first cup of coffee ever. Weird, I know. I'll be telling all about it next week!
Since you are a coffee drinker...what's your favorite?

#2-Korean Restaurant

This a blog about trying new things. Reaching beyond my comfort zone, exploring and making the most of life. My goal is to try 52 new things. One per week for a year. When I told my husband Joel that I was starting a blog about trying new things, the first suggestion he had was "you should try new types of food".  Of course... he would say that. I do not like trying new foods. Let me repeat that: I do not like trying new foods. Ask anyone who really knows me. I go to the same restaurants and eat the same things, over and over. My husband, on the other hand, will eat anything. No, really, I mean ANYTHING. He always says, "if I went on Survivor I would be the only contestant to gain weight". It has always mildly annoyed him that I am not more adventurous when it comes to food. Luckily, I have other positive traits that help him get over it. He suggested Korean and Indian. Our friends and family have been talking about a new Korean restaurant that recently opened....

#5 Body Wrap

This a blog about trying new things. Reaching beyond my comfort zone, exploring and making the most of life. My goal is to try 52 new things. One per week for a year. A few months ago I was at the gym. Upon entering there was a table with two young women sitting there promoting a spa package deal. I bought it, $60 for 5 different treatments including a "spot" body wrap. It also included a one hour message, facial and acupressure. My second trip to the spa I decided to do the body wrap. The only wrap I had heard about, besides the one you eat, was being wrapped up like a mummy then covered in cellophane wrap as you proceed to sit in a sauna a sweat off the pounds. That's called a compression wrap. I did not get one of those. What I got was a lot different. Vicky took me into a room with a massage table. She asked me where I would like the spot wrap done. I said "my muffin top, my stomach". She said, "that's what most ladies get done". She to...

#13-Medifast: Part 2

Continued... After ordering my Medifast food and a few days before it arrived I ate all my favorite foods. Kind of a binge good-bye to my dear friends...til we meet again. I had spent the day before my food arrived researching and reading anything I could find about Medifast including opinions on the food taste. Of course, everyone had an opinion and they were all different. Which means just about everything was sounding bad. I received my box of Medifast food August 31st. I opened it up and looked at my months worth of meals. It also came with some literature for me to read. Most of the meals are in powdered packets. Oatmeal, pudding, soup, brownies, soft serve ice cream, eggs, pancakes, shakes. They also have bars, puffs and pretzels. Annie shouts "I want a granola bar!" I wave my hands over the pile of food now spread out on the table..."this is all for mommy, ok?" Then I proceed to give her an apple for a snack. Inside I start to panic just a little but wonder...
